A Solution to the
Problem
by OldMaster85
It was Opening Day of the trout
season... one of those very cold opening days.
Two of my boys and I were at the
Neversink river in the Catskills getting into our waders, ready to do
battle with any trout that saw fit to rise to our flies.
I carefully got into the frigid water
and and told the boys to do the same. They weren't too anxious but
after much coaxing they walked in and started casting. Bobby went
downstream while Stan and I walked up to a nice pool where I figured we
would find some hungry trout.
After an hour of casting without any
luck, Stan hooked a good fish and played it carefully. He netted the
fish, a nice 12 inch brown, released it and said he was going
ashore. I asked him "How come?" and he said he had to
urinate. I told him that if he fought the impulse it would soon go
away. After a few minutes, he started to jump up and down, first on
one foot then the other, complaining, "Dad, I gotta go!".
I explained that there was no place to
go, no bathroom on the river or nearby. And getting out of the trout
clothing would be a pain in the neck. "What should I do?",
he asked seriously. Quietly, I told him, "Pee in your
waders". He looked at me in disbelief. "Are you
kidding?" he exclaimed. "No", I said.
"It's the best thing to do. And you won't contaminate the river
like you would if you pee on the bank or in the water."
He slowly nodded in agreement and took
up a "peeing position". I watched as he gradually
stopped bouncing around as he obtained obvious relief. When he
started walking away I asked how he felt. He looked at me with a
smile and said, "Great... and now my feet are warm!"
